IoT Project – Heart Rate Monitor

Welcome to Michaela’s Project Portfolio

My name is Michaela and I am currently in my fourth year of a Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) and Diploma of Professional Practice at the University of Technology Sydney. My major is Biomedical Engineering with an interest in medical devices.

The Summer Studio 2020 ‘IoT Product Development from a Data Perspective’ is a project based subject in which students are tasked to identify a problem and solve it by developing an IoT solution.

As a biomedical engineering student, I would like to pursue a career in medical device and instrumentation design – more specifically, disability technology. As the shift towards minimally invasive and more personal medical technologies grow, IoT presents itself to be a valuable solution; offering wirelessness, live data collection and more personal control from the user. For these reasons I have chosen to partake in this summer studio as I am motivated to learn more about IoT and how to develop such products. For this particular project I will be working towards designing an IoT heart rate monitor solution.

As someone with no previous experience with IoT development, during the course of this summer studio I would like to develop many skills that are required to produce a successful product. I would mainly like to focus my learning on hardware design, and subsequently the design process including prototyping, technical skills such as programming in Arduino IDE and keeping a reflective project portfolio through the medium of this website. I would also like to further develop my understanding of stakeholder needs in a biomedical context and achieve more UTS engineering Graduate Attributes.
